28TH ANNUAL CENTRAL EUROPEAN POLITICAL SCIENCE
ASSOCIATION'S CONFERENCE Faculty of Political Science & Diplomacy at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania together with Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA) and Lithuanian Political Science Association, successfully organized 28th annual Central European Political Science Association conference titled “Twenty years of EU membership: lessons learned, challenges and opportunities”. Conference was held on 3rd and 4th of October 2024 at the Faculty of Political Science & Diplomacy in Kaunas and attended by more than 150 scientists and academics not only from Europe, but also from the world, who could listen to over 130 papers, presented at 30 panels. The main topic of the conference was the twentieth anniversary of the largest enlargement to the European Union, where ten new members joined the Union, among them also eight from Central and Eastern Europe. As part of the opening speech, CEPSA President, prof. Miro Haček thanked the Faculty of Political Science & Diplomacy in Kaunas for the preparation and organisation of the conference, and also thanked members of his leadership team and all CEPSA members for their willingness to contribute towards CEPSA activities during his two-terms as the president of the association. During the conference, CEPSA Council met and decided on several important issue, among them also on new CEPSA leadership team (prof. Boglarka Koller from Hungary as president, prof. Agnieszka Kasinska-Metryka as vice-president and prof. Simona Kukovič as general secretary) and new executive committee, the international activity of CEPSA in next period and on next CEPSA annual conference, due in Warsaw on 18th and 19th of September 2025 (see minutes below). CEPSA AT APSA 2024
Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA) organised panel at 120th American Political Science Association’s Annual Meeting & Exhibition that was held in Philadelphia, USA, between 5th and 8th of September 2024. The topic of the panel was "Central and Eastern Europe twenty years after EU enlargement” and included four presentations from four CEPSA members countries ans six scholars, including Boglárka Koller (Hungary), Miro Haček and Simona Kukovič (Slovenia), Agnieszka Turska-Kawa (Poland), Petr Just (Czech Republic) and Christian Welzel (Germany). |
27TH ANNUAL CENTRAL EUROPEAN POLITICAL SCIENCE
ASSOCIATION'S CONFERENCE Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA) in partnership with Croatian Political Science Association successfully organised 27th annual conference titled "War and democracy: Central European democracies under pressure". Conference was held at the University of Dubrovnik (Croatia) on 28th and 29th of September 2023, attended by 150 participants who could listed to 128 papers presentations in 30 panels. In addition to main theme topic on Russian-Ukrainian war and democratic backsliding in the region, panels have focused on the stability and the region's economic situation, various EU and national public policies in the region, elections, conspiracy theories and their impact on the daily politics, etc. Prof. dr. Nenad Zakošek from the University of Zagreb delivered keynote address on the state-building, democracy and war and compared the consequences of the breakups of former Yugoslavia and Soviet Union. During the conference, CEPSA Executive Committee met and decided on several important issues, among them also on next CEPSA annual meetings (28th CEPSA annual conference will be held in Kaunas, Lithuania, on 3-4 October 2024; followed by the 29th annual meeting in Warsaw, Poland on 25-26 September 2025), the international activity of CEPSA in the next period and CEPSA journals. CEPSA AT IPSA WORLD CONGRESS 2023
It has already become a tradition that the Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA), in cooperation with the International Political Science Association’s (IPSA) Research Committee number 47 "Local – Global Relations“ organises panels at the World Political Science Congresses. The latest world congress, which took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between the 15 and 19 July 2023, was no exception. Four members of CEPSA’s national member political science associations – Liutauras Gudžinskas from Lithuania, Petr Just from Czechia (paper co-authored by Jakub Charvát), Agnieszka Kasinska-Metryka from Poland (paper co-authored by Rafal Dudala) and Karin Liebhart from Austria – participated in the panel titled "Institutional Barriers against Democratic Backsliding in Central and Eastern Europe.“ The panel focused on the ways and means how fragile Central European democracies can face threats and challenges from populist actors. Liutauras, Petr and Agnieszka also represented their respective national organisations at the meetings of the IPSA Council, held during the congress. |

Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA) organised panel at 118th American Political Science Association’s Annual Meeting & Exhibition that was held in Montreal, Canada, on 15th of September 2022. 26TH ANNUAL CENTRAL EUROPEAN POLITICAL SCIENCE
ASSOCIATION'S CONFERENCE Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA) in partnership with Slovenian Political Science Association and Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, successfully organised 26th annual Central European Political Science Association conference titled “Democracy after coronavirus: facing new political reality”. Conference was held on 2nd and 3rd of June 2022 at the Congress Centre Bled, Slovenia, and attended by more than 140 scientists and academics from 15 countries, not only from Europe, but also from the world, who could listen to 120 paper presentations in twenty-one panels. In addition to main theme pandemic-related issues, panels have focused on the decline of democratic processes in the region, the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on security, stability and the region's economic situation, and for the first time ever, eighteen PhD students had the chance to present their work in special panels dedicated to them. As part of the opening speech, acting CEPSA President, prof. Miro Haček thanked prof. Steven R. Smith (Georgetown University, APSA executive director) for coming to Slovenia and delivering keynote address and all CEPSA members for coming to Slovenia and participating at the event. During the conference, CEPSA Executive Committee met and decided on several important issue, among them also on next CEPSA annual meetings (next CEPSA annual conference will be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on 28-29 September 2023), the international activity of CEPSA in next period and first CEPSA multi-author book in cooperation with Edward Elgar publishing house. |
25TH ANNUAL CENTRAL EUROPEAN POLITICAL SCIENCE
ASSOCIATION’S CONFERENCE Institute of Political Science at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland together with Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA), successfully organized 25th annual Central European Political Science Association conference titled “Challenges to Democracy: Political Processes in Central and Eastern Europe”. Conference was held on 18th and 19th of November 2021 at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn and attended by more than 120 scientists and academics from 21 countries, not only from Europe, but also from the world, who could listen to over one hundred papers, presented at the twenty-five panels. Recent democracy trends in the Central and Eastern European countries are quite worrying and demand serious academic debate on the issue of democratic decline of the entire region just thirty years after democratic changes of 1990s. As part of the opening speech, acting CEPSA President, prof. Miro Haček thanked the Institute of Political Science at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn for the preparation of such an important conference, especially in these troubling times. During the conference, CEPSA Council met and decided on several important issue, among them also on new CEPSA leadership team and new executive committee, the international activity of CEPSA in next period and on next two CEPSA annual conference, due in Slovenia in 2022 and Croatia in 2023 (see minutes below). Institute of Political Science at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn proved that is not important how many obstacles there are, what is important is the ability to successfully promote and have the boldness to tackle the issues presented by the pandemic and organise the successful conference even in these challenging times. CEPSA AT 26TH IPSA WORLD CONGRESS
During 26th World Congress of Political Science, that was held virtually from 10 to 15 July 2021, Central and Eastern Political Science Association (CEPSA) organized two panels with total of ten presentations, namely “National Political Parties in Central Europe” held as one of the General Sessions, and “Populism in Central and Eastern Europe: The Rise of Populist Political Parties and Leaders”, that was held under the umbrella of RC47. All presented papers will be published in multi-author book, that will be published by Edvard Elgar publishing house in early 2022. |
FIRST VIRTUAL CEPSA ROUND TABLE
Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA) organized first virtual Zoom conference on the impacts of Covid19 pandemics on the politics of Central and Eastern European region, with participants from most CEPSA member countries. Virtual Round Table was held on 15 October 2020 from 12 noon to 2pm. CEPSA will organize additional virtual round tables in near future. |
24TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF CENTRAL EUROPEAN POLITICAL
SCIENCE ASSOCATION (CEPSA) The Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Pécs, Hungary, successfully organized 24th annual Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA) conference titled “CEE – A Region In-Between”. Conference was held on 26 and 27 September 2019 at the University of Pécs and attended by more than 150 scientists and academics from more than 15 countries, not only from Europe, but also from the world, who could listen to 107 papers, presented at the twenty panels. Recent trends in the Central and Eastern European countries further proved the unique position and mindset of the region – in-between two different worlds and cultures, the East and the West. What a few might call the return of history, the countries once again experience uncertainty, political extremity and the influence of external powers. As part of the opening speech, acting CEPSA President, prof. dr. Miro Haček thanked The Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Pécs for the preparation of such an important conference, whose organization is de facto a recognition of the workplace as important for the discipline of political science. During the conference, CEPSA executive board met and decided on several important issue, among them also on the international activity of CEPSA in next period (CEPSA will organize panels both at IPSA World Congress in Lisbon and American Political Science Annual Conference in San Francisco) and on next two CEPSA annual conference, due in Olsztyn in 2020 and Ljubljana in 2021. The Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Pécs proved that the size is not important, but the ability to successfully promote and become aware of both the public and the professional community, through the organization of such important events. |
